Coach Becerra is Back! Long time Head Coach Tony Becerra is back in a full time capacity after a year of reorganization. Coach Becerra is motivated to get back in the wrestling room and get this Royal Wrestling team to top form and competing for a Channel League Championship and Individual CIF Awards. Coach Becerra is ready to get the summer program going and getting the kids ready for camp during this most important time of the off season. "I'm hoping for a big freshman class this year, freshman are the key for a strong program. We need to get as many freshman football players involved too. Football and wrestling go hand n hand and complement each other. Alex Mack, the starting Pro Bowl center for the Cleveland Browns Football team, is the perfect example of how one program can help the other. Alex's nickname his freshman year was Goofy. Alex was a big kid but just hadn't developed his coordination or balance yet. During summer wrestling camp at the end of his sophomore year, Alex just hit the switch in his head and all the coaches were impressed with his work ethic and his physicality. That camp was his turning point in both football and wrestling. Alex earned football honors that next fall and was crowned CIF Wrestling Champion in the Heavy weight division. Alex wasn't the only football player to benefit from wrestling that season. The Royals football team was loaded with starting players on both offense and defense. That football team was one of the last teams to qualify for the CIF Playoffs and also won multiple City Championships. " said Coach Becerra.

Louie Giroux wins the Camarillo Tournament in dominate fashion. Louis Giroux had a great weekend going 9-0 with 7 pins and improving his record to 14-2. This is Louie's second tournament placing in two tries, 5th at Newbury Park, setting up for his biggest test of the season this weekend at Northview where he will be competing in 171lb weight class. Julian Lake has also had an impressive season thus far placing 2nd at Camarillo with a 8-1 record registering 5 pins of his own. Julian is finding himself at the top of the 215lb weight division with this follow up performance, Newbury Park Champion last week. Julian's record improves to 13-2. Royals 145lb Connor Pfefferle had a great performance of his own, competing in the toughest weightclass of the tournament. Connor was 6-3 for the two days but was excited facing the #3 ranked wrestler in the State, Matt Hickman from Camarillo. Connor gave Hickman, I think, the toughest test of the day, losing by decision. Mikey Martins had his best tournament of his carrer placing 3rd with a 7-2 record and adding 6 pins to his list. The pin of the day was Saturdays team record 20 seconds. Martins overall record is now 13-3. David Billesbach is off to a great start too placing 4th at Camarillo and 5th at Newbury Park. David had a chance to redeem himself from last weeks lost, facing Rio Mesa's Michael Gabrie in the first round, beating Gabrie 7-2. David improves to 12-4.
Placing at Camarillo and Newbury seems to be the theme for this very experienced Royals team that boast 9 seniors. We have had a bout with the flu that limits our ability to fill a full team but I think this coming weekend we will see the Royals at their best. Heavy Weight Luis Urbina has been battling the flu for a few weeks now, we hope to have him at weight and ready to go very soon. Luis is a Senior and returning CIF Placer from last season.
